A Black Hills Wedding & Elopement Guide: Why South Dakota Should Be at the Top of Your List.
If you’re planning an elopement and you haven’t seriously considered the Black Hills of South Dakota, let me make the case.
I’ve been photographing in these hills my whole life first as someone who grew up here, and now as a photographer who gets to document some of the most meaningful moments people bring to this landscape. The Black Hills are genuinely one of the most underrated elopement destinations in the country, and I’m convinced more couples would choose it if they only knew what it looked like.
Why the Black Hills?
Here’s what you need to know.
The Black Hills sit in the southwestern corner of South Dakota, rising up from the Great Plains like something out of a fever dream. Ponderosa pine forests, granite formations, wildlife, and dramatic skies all within a few hours of major airports in Rapid City and Denver. It’s wild enough to feel remote, but accessible enough to actually get to.
It’s also still relatively undiscovered for elopements compared to places like Colorado or the Pacific Northwest, which means fewer crowds and more flexibility at popular spots.
Some of The Best Black Hills Wedding & Elopement Locations:
Needles Highway
One of the most dramatic drives in the country, Needles Highway winds through towering granite spires and narrow rock tunnels. At golden hour, the light turns the rock faces amber and pink. It feels like another planet. I’ve photographed several sessions here and it never gets old.
Black Hills National Forest
Nearly 1.25 million acres of public land means you can find a clearing, a meadow, a ridgeline, or a stream and essentially have it to yourselves. No venue fee, no crowds just you and the trees.
Sylvan Lake
Located in Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake is ringed by massive granite boulders and pine trees reflecting off still water. It’s one of the most photogenic spots in the state, full stop. Early morning is magical before the day hikers arrive.
Iron Mountain Road
Like Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road features pigtail bridges, tunnels framed with views of Mount Rushmore in the distance, and sweeping overlooks. If you want a ceremony spot that feels cinematic, this is it.
Rankin Ridge, Wind Cave National Park
For couples who want something quieter and less trafficked, the trails and open grasslands around Wind Cave National Park offer a different side of the Black Hills — wide, peaceful, and endlessly beautiful under a big sky.
When to Elope in the Black Hills
Spring (May–June): Wildflowers, green hillsides, mild temps. Occasional afternoon thunderstorms that make for dramatic skies.
Summer (July–August): Peak season. Warm, lots of daylight. Some crowds at the popular spots.
Fall (September–October): My personal favorite. The aspens and scrub oak turn gold and orange. The air is crisp. Light is softer. Fewer people.
Winter (November–March): Snow transforms the Black Hills into something quiet and otherworldly. If you’re up for it, the images are unlike anything else.
Every season has something to offer.
What to Know Before You Go
Most public land in the Black Hills doesn’t require a permit for small ceremonies (always confirm current regulations with the National Forest or state park before your date). For Custer State Park, there’s an entrance fee. Wind Cave and Jewel Cave are National Park units with their own rules.
I know these locations well and can help you find the right spot for your vision, logistics, and the season you’re getting married in.
